I'm located in FL and looking for a 1979 or newer O'day 25 somewhere in the southeast in good condition.

Not a "hard" fix but I'm looking for something without "big" issues. If there is bulkhead damage there may be water damage on the cabin top and a number of other issues. It's a 7 hour ride from here just to find out it's not the boat I want. I've been in the boat restoration mode for the last 10 years, just looking to go sailing now.

It is difficult to avoid some sort of 'restoration mode' with 30 year old boats. Are you sure you want a old boat? Get a new boat and go sailing now.

I can understand that John and I don't blame you one bit. Take your time and find what you think will be a good boat for the money with less problems down the road. I bought my boat new and a couple of years later the rudder blade broke. I went down to the O'Day factory and bought another blade. Soon after, that blade started to delaminate and break but by then O'Day had gone out of business. Then my chainplate bracket broke and I added new and different type chainplates to my boat. I've owned three new sailboats since I've been boating and even with new boats, you still don't know what you're getting until you've owned them for a while. With that said though, I think that I have my boat set up the way I like it and I'm satisfied as of now, that is until I think of a new modification. I've done about thirty of them so far and I'm still counting.

Bellnier:

He is in driving distance of two of the sailboat companies still making small sailboat: Seaward and Nimble.

Obviously he expects to find a used boat in new boat condition. To do that he would have to be willing to drive more than 7 hours. Think drive to Canada, The Great Lakes area, Pacific Northwest just to begin.

Maybe fly to Europe? Etap makes small boats.

Actually about four years ago there were a bunch of 25's on this site's classified. Since that time I saw a 25 chopped up for the dump because it was an old boat, a project boat.

I have also seen boats that are project boats and only 15 years old. It either takes work or money or both to keep a boat in order.

Diesel vs outboard

In my search for a 25 I've seen some with factory diesels and others with outboards.

Is a diesel a plus or minus in a small boat like this?

TIA,

I like an outboard for a small boat. More easily serviced and maintained and the 25 has a ventilated tank compartment in the cockpit that'll fit two mercury 3 gal. tanks. But it's susceptible to being stolen if left on a mooring or a lonely dock.

Rich,

I've only owned up to a 23 and kind of feel the same but... some of the guys with bigger boats that have had diesels would never go back to an outboard.

I'm still on the fence.
