On the boat that is. However, I ran back up to Hampton last Thursday to take a weekend road trip to see Appomattox and some other Civil War sites. I followed the route of Lee’s retreat up to the beautifully restored surrender site and then took one of Virginia’s scenic byway roads back along the James River. A couple days in a car and a night in a motel convinced me once again that I would really rather be cruising. I’d planned to go on up into the mountains but the weather report made being here on the boat with the cabin heater going seem a lot more appealing as well as cheaper.
Before leaving Portsmouth, I had a very nice visit and dinner with the senior captain of the Pride of Baltimore II who I haven’t sat down with since about the time my boys were born.
I spent the next two days taking the very convenient ferry over to Norfolk. I went through the McArthur museum and then immediately over to the mall to watch the moving “Emperor”. If you aren’t keeping up on movies, it is the story of the opening days of the occupation of Japan.
Buck420 came down for another lunch one day.
Just before the museum and movie, I was walking around the waterfront and took a turn down a short residential street. There was another of my research vessels tied up right at the end of the street.
I’d planned a visit the vessel while in the area but they had a busy week. I expect to be going back down to these twin cities again before heading north though. It’s one of the great stops in the mid-Atlantic.
I have to be in Hampton Thursday and Friday for the second round interview on the research vessel project so I’ll just be staying put and hanging out here for the next week.
Cold rain predicted for the next couple of days. I love my cabin heater.
