Peggie, I took your advice and checked the air vent for the head waste tank. When I disconnected the hose from the vent, it (the vent) was clogged with dust and spider webs, which I removed. Then I used an old wire halyard as a plumbers snake to remove any possible clogs in the hose. I feed it until it wouldn't go in any further. Prior to all this, I would hear a bubbling sound and could watch the liquid partially back-fill the bowl. All seemed to work fine for awhile, but after about 20 minutes, I checked the bowl, and it again had some water, about three to four inches. No where near as much as before. The head is new this year (August). The tank was emptied just before I installed it. The thru hull was closed, so I'm pretty sure it wasn't "flush" water, although the water was clear. Where should I look now, or is it normal to have a little water in the bowl? Thank you in advance.

Sounds like you still may have a vent clog
Make sure that both the thru-hull and the connection at the tank are clear...'cuz if there were spider webs in the hose, there HAS to be stuff in the thru-hull. Also take the hose off the tank...'cuz the next most common place for vent clog is the tank vent fitting--especially on sailboats cause waste runs into the vent when the boat is heeled. If they're clear, the only other logical explanation is, you aren't flushing long enough in the dry mode to move the bowl contents/flush water all the way to the tank...it's running back down and seeping back into the bowl through the joker valve.

A true experience on a trip for "Bare Boat" certification: Weather was snotty and only myself and two women showed up. These women were game enough but not accustomed to gorp and crude accomodations, upscale gals they was. After 3 days we pulled up to the pump out dock; I was assigned to wash down the fordeck. For some reason the pumpout would not produce. I heard the skipper say "get down in the head and pump like a mad fiend". One Lady did just that. Nothing came out! skipper withdrew the hose; there was a low gurgle followed by a geyser blasting out the waste pipe. The lady held her arms out, rotated about three times "I'm, I,m covered in, in..." "IM COVERED IN...SHIT!" She said. I was holding the washdown hose kind of stunned, Held it up and she nodded so I gave her a washdown for and aft top to bottem then same for our captain. 1. You can build up a lot of pressure with a good head 2. This is the best sport there is! I can laugh all winter on that memory.
