We are having a problem with a stiff wheel. The boat is on the hard, you can move the rudder by hand and with the emergency tiller. the cable system below looks clean as new. greased the bearing below the compass, but do know if and where another point is below the compass. We also disconected the cable system with no improvement. SO think it has to be in the pedestal., it was made for Hunter until 1990, a merriman made by yacht specialists.any suggestions ? gatorfred

I'm sure you have already checked but is there a wheel break on the pedestal? Could it be clamped too tight? Regards

disconnect the cable from the steering quadrant.
GF: Try disconnecting the cables from the steering quadrant. That should tell you if you have a rudder or pedestal problem.

Chain
Check to make sure that there is nothing caught in the chain linkage inside the pedestal. I had a wire from the compass get bound up once.

Also had a wire to instruments get caught up
Made the steering wire tighter and made the wheel harder to turn. Had to replace the wire but did not know the cause until our wind speed indicator went dead. It was bound up for half the summer before it broke. Marybeth & Rip
