I have a fairly hard time shifting out of gear after the motor has been running for a while, which occasionally makes it exciting while docking. Although I pumped all the fuel, changed the oil and replaced all the filters in the engine (Yanmar) when I bought her this spring, I neglected to do anything to the transmission. Is it possible that it may just be low on oil, or is this symptomatic of other problems? I realize that I should just check the oil, but the boat is 3-1/2 hours away and I was making my to-do list this morning before work and just remembered. Normally, by the time I get home from the coast, I have forgotten all about the problems, only remembering when I next approach the dock.

You need a log book to write all this down

Your problem could be internal i would have a pro transmission person look at it. I may be some adjusting could do it but it could be a whole lot more serious.

oh try this

Try disconnecting the shift lever on the transmission form the cable, you could have a bad cable. it it shifts in and out at the gear box, its probably a sticking cable.

Rich, ed has a good suggestion...

We had a similar problem when we purchased our boat. It turned out to be a failing clevis at the pedestal end of the shifter cable. Fortunately it failed just as I shifted into neutral as the boat kissed the dock. The new cable shifts gears like a dream. If it turns out to be a bad cable, I recommend replacing the throttle cable, too. Keep the old one as a spare. Terry

Try disconnecting the cable at the tranny

Suggestion, disconnect the cable at the tranny and move the lever by hand.If it moves freely, it is probably a cable problem. Also, check where the cable is attached to the rear of the tranny, there maybe a small notch that the cable sits into and then the retaing nut on the bracket is tightened. If the cable is not in the notch, it will not shift properly. This happened to me.Good luck.
