Back in the Spring you were going to install the Nexus 3000 system. Can you report on it now? Did you install all the components? Are you using the Multi display at the helm? Prices must have gone up, the 2000 system is over $1000. at Defender. Still a good buy if it is reliable.

Ed, Nexus

Ed: I bought it last spring because I got the 3000 system for $1049 and no sales tax. If I were you I'd shop it around for a while and see if they have some boat show specials. The current price for the 3000 system is $1249-1299. The reason I bought this unit was based on the Practical Sailor review and the price. It is very easy to hookup. You can daisy chain the display units after the basic installation or use a single display as a Multi. Everything hooks up to a CPU. Even has an input for the GPS. The boat is due to be pulled for a bottom job and we will have the transducers installed then. It will probably be in the spring before we do ours unless "my boat comes in" (aka winning the lottery). Bottom job is $600 plus the transducer installation and patching of the old ones.

Thanks Steve.

I have the same problem. I buy something and then can't find the time or conditions to install. I have two of ten NFM portlights installed after eighteen months. My lazyjacks have been in the basement for twelve months. But my mast is horizontal now(I can finally measure the LENGTH :)) and it's a good time to install a wind transducer. I have heard good things about Nexus and was looking for more. My original(1979) Signet instruments can't last much longer so the complete system makes sense. My plan was to have the Multi display at the helm and put a repeater display at the nav station someday. Will you cut new holes for the log and depth transducers?

Think I'm going to put both thru hull.

Ed: I think that I am going to put both of the transducers thru the hull. There are very explicite instructions as to the proximity of the location of the transducers. They are suppose to place forward of the keel and they give you minimums. I suppose this is to prevent any venturi action caused by water passing by the keel (obviously the water speeds up when it passes the keel). My present setup is with the depth sounder glued inside the hull under the v-berth. The people that installed my old Navico Instruments (circa 1987) installed the speedo next to the keel in the bilge (dumb). I may add another display to the system after I see how they work. This is the beauty of the Nexus system. You just run a jumper from one display to the next and get the added functionally. Considering the functions that the 3000 system provides, I don't think that there is any other system on the market that measures up to it for the price. PS: I have an extra Nexus compass if you are interest.
