Steve, Tom just called me on cell from offshore about an overheating problem on the H31 that he just purchased. He started up the yanmar and ran her for 30 min. when the audible alarm came on. He has shut the motor down and is on a nice sail plan for Sand Diego. I had him check the strainer(clean)check the seacock(open). He has a 3 blade prop and was at 2300RPM when he got the alarm. He has a steady drip at the waterpump(weep-hole?)I suggested that he may have had something clogging his intake and that it was cleared when he stopped the motor. FYI..ran the engine for 30 min during purchase sail and no problem. Any thoughts on what the problem may be. Is the low oil audible alarm the same as the heat? Shoot me an e-mail and we can get on a phone..thanks.

Yanmar 2GMF overheating

Same problem on our 86 H31 a couple of years ago. It was the heat exchanger tubes clogged up. Had the yard remove the hx, acid clean and reinstall, and has purred like a kitten ever since.

Flush and replace coolant

Awhile back I changed my ccolant in my H31. I called Thoreson Marine to discuss "coolant". They told me there is a better coolant on the market that does not coat the heat exchanger and provides better transfer of heat in the heat exchanger. I can't remember the name, but it has a different color. They said, that normal automotive coolant coats the exchanger and sort of insulates the metal and thus there is a poor cooling process.
