My '83 Hunter 34 has a water fill cap inside the port side stern locker. It is accessible from the cockpit. I am wondering if this is totally separate from the other water tank or is it connected? Also, if separate, is there some kind of switch to change tanks?

Dutchy, There was a pretty good discussion of this a month or so ago.. a search should bring ya pictures and stuff.. but to answer , the tank is separate and the selector is in the port side setee locker just forward of the main water tank .. Most of us with 34's keep it empty except when needed since it contributes to stern squat and slows ya down a little..

And some of us...

don't use it at all but carry gallon spring water jugs and bottles for the same reasons! :)

I keep mine empty too. But if for some reason I ever need to leave my boat at the dock for a long time, I might fill it up just to make her float on her lines.

Mark...

filling the stern tank may slightly balance the cross ship list but just mostly sit the stern down more. Figuring 8 pounds a gallon, thats an additional 240+ pounds back there.

I looked at my boat the other day from the finger pier the next one over from my slip (slips still empty between). The port side water line along the boat was even along the waterline stipe from bow to stern and the bottom paint more exposed than the starboard side. Looked at from the starboard side and the stripe is noticeably closer to the water, but even bow to stern.

The port side water tank (and stern tank) is empty as is the holding tank and water heater. Only battery weight is in place now. Tool box is under the port side salon seat now. Once the port side water tank is filled, and the water heater filled, the boat floats much closer to even balance side to side.

Cruising on the Bay, we're not anchoring out over night so are able to refill the port water tank wherever we tie up if need be. We've had no need for the capacity of the stern tank.
