Anyone every replaced a "packing ring" (for lack of a better name) in the stern tube at the top. I removed my rudder and post as it would bang slightly from side to side. I looked into the tube today and found an indentation at the top where some remdants of a rubber gasket still remained. I need to know where to obtain this item or whether I could use a substitution such as 5200, any thoughts, expertise or the like is appreciated. Thank you.

No Offence but my boat has a 1 1/4 inch
rudder shaft with a bottom bearing a packing gland on top and bears no resemblance to you rudder assembly. Therefore it is presumptuous to think that your rudder problems are generic and all boat owners would know immediately what manner of problem you had.

Indeed, and for that I am grateful, I have used this website and been both taking and dispensing advice for three years here. I'm sorry if I have offended you, however, I encountered this same sort of response recently and most likely by you. I know in most circumstances, model, make, year etc. are important. In this situation, (keeping in mind that I do not want to sound like an ingrate) we have a basic indentation in the stern tube that needs to be filled with a rubber gasket, unless you have a specific rubber gasket in mind for a specific model, than it's a moot point. Sorry for my prickliness.

an "O" ring in the indent? They come in a wide range of sizes both in outside diameter and in cross section. For what it may be worth, when make and model are listed with the problem it narrows down the places that we look for the answers. From your initial post you could have been talking about a twenty footer or a fifty footer. Peace.

If the indent is at the extreme top of the rudder tube (under the tiller head) it might be either a place for a bushing or bearing. If the rudder stock is a loose fit in the tube just below the indent, a bushing or bearing is called for to reduce the play. If there is little/no play between the rudder stock and the tube just below the indent, is is probably a seal of some sort. I have never seen a seal at the top of a rudder tube when the top of the tube is above the waterline. Why would a seal be needed? What would hold the seal in? In wheel steered systems where the quadrant is close to the waterline, there should be a packing gland around the shaft. The packing is held into the tube with a nut and is adjusted like any other packing.
