Stern tube replacement

Hi all,

Continuing the saga of plotting out the repower of my Albin. Looks as if
the previous owner succeeded in breaking the stern shaft tube off right at
the inside of the hull.

Have any of you replaced the this? Would welcome any suggestions about the
easiest way to do this, and sources for a new one.++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Dave,

Go to a rubber and or pipe supply company, You need a flexible rubber
hose which is impervious
heat and salt water. I bought a length of it and actually created a
goose neck in it as is necessary. I think it was around $75.00 here in
Anchorage at Alaska Rubber and Supply.

good luck, You will also need a wet exhaust box immediately behind the
motor, $65.00 or so.

All,
I have been following this line of discussion closely as I have just
converted my Ballad from its original face seal to a stuffing box, or should
I say more precisely the boat yard did the conversion for me. The
conversion seems to be working very well and has given me great peace of
mind. Good Luck!

Also, being new to your group I don't know how this works, but I would like
to advertise my boat for sale. It is a 1978 Ballad model located on
Narragansett Bay near the MA RI (USA) border. The boat is in very good
shape and I would be willing to talk in the range of $15-16000. If anyone
has any interest please let me know.

Thanks

Rich

Do you have a picture and some details of the vessel. I won't be coming to
see (or buy) but I am curious.

Thanks

I think you might be able to bore out the rest of the tube from the aft end
and epoxy in a new tube. You might think about going a little bigger
diameter, say 1 1/2 inch instead of the original 1 1/14. Might make
alignment a little less difficult. Also, you'll need a new stern bearing -
check Buck-Algonquin for this. I'd be afraid to simply epoxy in a new tube
without having a continuous tube all the way aft. Understand, however, that
I didn't actually have to do all this but thought about it. I managed to
save the existing tube. Could you get a hole saw around the bilge end of the
broken tube and make a recess to epoxy a new oversized tube slid over the
stub? Might be an alternative worth trying before you bore out the whole
thing. Good thing there's lots of room to work under that cockpit hatch!
