I have a Hunter 27 (current) and am wondering what length/diameter/type of line to use to tie the stern to the shore in tight coves/moorages. The shorelines I'm most likely to tie to are in the San Juans - rocky shores lines with trees.

This will of course vary according to water depth, what you can tie to on the shore, plus other variables.

Use the yellow polypropylene

We have a 40 foot Hunter and used to do a lot of this type of anchoring when we were in the NW. We didn't need to in the San Juans, but did use the technique in Desolation Sound and The Gulf Islands. Polypropylene line floats, which makes it difficult to get caught in your prop. Also, hauling wet soggy nylon anchor rode in a dinghy gets to be a bother. We also found that most people using this anchoring method, use the yellow line. For your size boat, 1/2" would be just fine. Roll it up on a spool and you can get away with quite a bit of line. When setting the stern line, run it to a tree with your dinghy, then bring it back to your boat. That way, you can get under way without leaving your boat. We had 200 feet of the stuff and if we couldn't be within 100 feet of shore, we would just tie it off to the tree. Butmost of the time, our stern was about 50 feet or so from land. Just make sure to check the tides a lot.

TN, we use 500 feet of 3/8th inch poly...

on our boat and find it just about right in most places where we need to shore tie. I keep it wound on a plastic rope spool that I mount in a fish pole holder on the stern rail. That way it will spool out as I row ashore, wrap it around something on shore and bring the working end back to the boat. Works great for us. Terry

In many of the tight anchorages steel...

rings have been installed to facilitate stern ties. In the absence of these rings I've used logs on shore as ties. I prefer not to use live trees with bark because of the damage it causes to the poly rope as you pull it through. Terry
