Stern Rub Rails?

Does anyone know how to protect the fiberglass deck overhangs at the stern corners of a 1985 31 footer? These overhangs are unprotected by rub rails and seem to magnetically attract pilings and bulkheads while docked or when docking. I am tired of continually repairing the glasswork after crushings. Any suggestions for protecting this very vulnerable (poorly designed) area of the boat with something substantial like a curved rubrail?

Poorley designed? Bumper cars?

This isn't a bumper car! The stern of your boat is not poorly designed, look at expensive boats and you'll see the same stern. Charter companies put rub rails on the stern as a lot of charterers are not careful. You can getr inexpensive "dock" rub rails and install them. Bob

Wow...responses seem a little critical

I too have eyed the corners of my '84 31' becuase they are cracked and look bad. They were that way before I bought the boat, but I suspect that I might have smacked the dock a time or two and added to the problem. But give me a break. I've piloted everything from a dinghy to a 56' powerboat and s#$% happens. So go easy on us. I was condsidering using some of the u-shaped channel molding West and the other stores sell. Unfortunately, you have to buy about 25' at a time. That's why I have not tackled this project yet. I think a nice white channel modelding covering the corner would look good. Any suggestions where to find it in 1' sections?

Try Defender, Don

I have an old catalog in which they advertise it by the foot. (..you know, like the one you fend off with ;>) RD

Might make things worse

If you find something nice and cushiony, and screw it down to the overhang, could it just make things worse? I could be a "piling snagger" that keeps catching on all those things we're already bumping. What about a small "fender" with pre-length lines and hooks that you could pull out and hook on the stern rail corner just for docking?

Check Benneteau (SP?)

We had a big Benneteau (poss 50') at our marina in Virginia for a while. it had been in charter in the VI and it had a great big fitted bumper around the lower edge of the stern. Maybe the c-2 Benneteau site will have somethink like that.
