The former owner sustained a "ding" on the very edge of the stern. Certainly not being critical here, our new slip is going to necessitate stern-to docking and I know that another "ding" is not out the realm of possibilities. I recently saw a Hunter 29.5 that had as significant rub rail over this susceptible area. Is this something that I could possibly put on my boat? Where is it available? I don't want something that looks horrible.

Welcome to the nature of Boats. Just like cars in parking lots, they get the occasional ding, rub against the dock, or
Opps too fast, TOO FAST... crunch.

You can find two approaches to protecting your baby.
  1. Place large fenders on the dock at boat level, so that as you back up your boat you hit the hanging fender and not the dock. I have a friend who turned a large fender horizontal and hung it from the dock. He comes in bow first, aims and rams the fender. No marks. Jumps off the boat and ties up to the dock cleats. You can do that with a couple of fenders and bring the Stern is just as easily.
  2. There are vinyl rails that attache to docks to fend off you boat. Easier to attach to the dock and not "ugly" on your boat . Work similar to your boat rub rail idea.
