I have just bought a 1974 Hunter 25 which has no stern rail. I would like to add one and am looking for suggestions on the cheapest way to do it. Any chance on finding one made for the boat or a shop that would have the template already?

me too!

I have a 77 Hunter 25 and have been wishing for stern rails. Who is the resident expert here? Steve Hall S/V Helen Highwater

Bob, If prefab seating is not available then I

would build a set. I have them on my H26 and will never own a boat without. Since I have the equipment to build them this is easy for me to say. If you know someone that can fab metal, then bending and welding up the framework would be easier that fortifying the coaming to mount them. You would have to chrome plate or powder coat the rails if they aren't made of stainless. Another posibility is to find a salvaged stern rail seat frame from a larger boat and section them down in size to fit your boat. Downsizing is easier than upsizing. If I can help more write back Ray S/V Speedy Ray

got a reply

I got a reply from tops in quality...They have specs for my 1984 Hunter 20...$500 plus shipping for single rail...If I could afford stuff like that, I would not be sailing a 1984 20 footer...Thought you might want to try them... www.topsinquality.com

Thanks for trying first

I did go to that website and didn't get a chance to measure and fill out the forms. Was that for welded or mechanical? I'm assuming welded is preferable, but for us cheapskates on old boats, wouldn't the other be okay?

machined

I would guess that machined would be fine. I have pretty much decided to do without. It's the rails or slip rental for a year.

cheap slip!

I wish my slip was that cheap. I am investigating local fabricators. There is one at the yard where the boat is stored. Should I see about a two for one deal? What year is your boat?

Cost of living

KY has nice low cost of living, but salaries are proportional. Boat is 1982 Hunter 20, never hurts to ask...Thanks Gary
