I have a1995 Hunter 26. I have seen the latest brochures, and boats, that have the stern rail seats and I was wondering if it is worth adding them to my boat. While they look convenient, I have heard that they may not be practical because of how they effect sail trim. Before I spend the money on investing in stern rail seats I would like to hear what owners of these seats think about them. Any reply will be appreciated.

Sail trim

Not sure what effect a couple of stern rail seats would have on that??

I bought the stern rail seats for my 35' sailboat from the chandelry three years ago and everybody uses them. They are the best seats on the boat. Well worth the investment.

Make it comfortable

The 26/260 is never going to be fast so you might as well make it comfortable and fun. The sternrail seats expand the cockpit at anchor and provide a nice perch under sail when you want to see over the cabin. it does put a lot more weight in the back of the boat though (people weight as well as the seats themselve. That's why some folks have moved the battery(ies) forward under the seats. The seats are great. Markdb

Well worth...

I don't know about how they affect sailing capabilities but they definitely increase workable cockpit area and are the best seats in the house. I highly advise that you buy the seat cushions and make cushions for the rail.

Go for it

If the coaming on the 95H26 is sloped down aft as it is on my 95H23.5, you already know that there isn't much of a side wall to lean back on when sitting at the aft end of the cockpit benches. Always feels like you could just topple out. Having the stern rail seats makes it much safer and comfortable when sitting there, not to mention that the seats themselves are as great to have as everybody says. I strung a lifeline over the transom between the two seats because the transom stern rail on the 95H23.5 is only knee-high. I don't have any seat covers yet. When wearing a lifejacket the bar is OK to lean against when sitting on the stern rail seats. Not comfortable with no padding. I use 3/4" pipe insulation (which has 1 1" hole in it). Cost $2.00, but only comes in black and gray around here.

Rick, I have had an h26 with stern rail seats for five years. At sail, an adult using one will depress the stern of the boat dramatically. Yes, it does affect handling. At anchor or at the dock, no one feels they are particularly comfortable. They came with my boat. In my opinion, they are not worth the expense. David King "Molly"

Get the seats!

As Dave pointed out they do adversely affect boat trim BUT they are the best seat in the house by far. Kids love them. alan
