I have a 1986 catalina 27. My wife and daughter want to be up higher and I was thinking about putting in stern rail seats. I was concerned about the possible stress on the current rails and wondering if anyone has done this and their experience positive or negative.

Gary, I purchased some after market stern rail seats found on the catalina website and they work great. I have a C-30 but they also sell the seats for various boat lenghts. No drilling required. I did not need any futher support due to the railing wrapping around the stern of the boat. Only issue I have is the backstay splits and makes sitting a little tight.

seats

I made rear seats for my Catalina 28 my self and they work great. Everyone perfers to sit there and they allow me to sit and stear. I made them a little larger to fit us more comfortably, use a piece of cardboard to draw a seat that overlaps the rails by 1" and comes out and curves to fit you. Use this as a templet to cut out the seats. I made them from 3/4" cutting board material that I got at the local plastic supply store. Us PVC pipe with @30% cut out lengthwise that will allow them to SNAP on the current tubing, use screws to hold the PVC to the seat: put screw (countersunk) UP from the PVC into the seat. Then I made a vertical support from alum tubeing and bimini tube connection parts that connects the bottom of the seat to the side of the fiberglass below the seat yet allowing the rear hatch to open. I will get a JPG of the seats this weekend and if your interested e-mail me ay "KDSSAIL@HOTMAIL.COM" and I will send the jpg's to you. I also put in cup holders and mounted stero speakers under the seats. Dave Slepoy
