I ordered stern rail seats for my 23.5 last week (don't tell my wife as they are her Valentine's Day present) and was wondering if anyone had any hints on their installation for me. It looks like it is one of those jobs that is more a pain in the butt than really being difficult to figure out or to do, but I would like to hear from someone who has done it before.

Dealer did mine...
Although my dealer did the work, and did a fine job, I did have some leaks at the attachment points during the second year and so I partially re-installed them to re-caulk. The seats attached in 2 areas: outboard, where the top and bottom halves of the hull joined, and inboard on each side of the U-shaped open transom. The only problem with the outboard points is that it is difficult to get a wrench or socket on the nuts. The inboard points attach where the fiberglass isn't all that thick, so some 3/8 plywood had been used as backer/reinforcment. There were 7 bolts per side that all went through the plywood pieces. The starboard side was easy to work on, the port side, with the motor mount, was a pain. One of those fancy ratcheting wrenches would've helped. If you don't have one, get yourself a telescoping tiller extension so you can sit back in the new seat and still steer comfortably, and enjoy the seats - they're great!

ok guys,two things to remember. Do not drill large holes for the bolts just the right size and make sure you caulk liberally and clean up immediately any excess caulking with denatured alcohol. How big are the plywood backing plates?If there is one thing I am not short on it is tools. I consider any new tool an investment my wife thinks they are a pain to store and move every time Uncle Sam says it is time.

Best investment - ok luxury item - I've purchased fo my boat. Passengers love them, adds room, look great, fun, and add a spot for the Bar-be. They did take some time to install - not a big deal though. Had some problems installing the backing plates. Not much room for error in centering your holes. All in all, they changed to entire look of the boat. Remember, you'll need to shorten the life lines - I took the opportunity to replace mine.

I as well am looking at the stern rail seats, but tell me, tell me, How do thay work with a bimini? Are thay in the way? Can you see over the bimini while sitting in the seats? Can any one sit in the seats with the bimini up? Can you even put up the bimini with stern rail seats? I' m looking to not only reat this, but If provided, I will call and would like to talk to you about it. Like every one, I do'nt wont to spend $600+ and not be HAPPY with It. Dave B. Linclon Ne.

Backing Plates and regarding SRS with Bimini
Rick, the plywood "backing plates" were about 5x8 or 4x7 inches (sorry I traded in the boat and am going from memory, and each side was a little different) but were kinda funny shaped, not true rectangles, due to the shape of the area in which they were installed. On the Bimini, I had one with my SRS. The bimini attached with one long pole to each side of the boat, and to the "backrest" rail on the SRS, with a shorter pole of course than a standard bimini would have had. When the bimini was not deployed, ie it was rolled up, it sat over the SRS. I am 5'11', and I could see over the bimini both when deployed and not. When rolled up, it I could just set my chin on the top of the roll. When deployed, I could easily see over it, as it was a couple inches lower then. It was a nice addition, lots of shade - I'd do it again. HTH!
