Should work

Hi Vickie - Check with the chandlery right here on this site (see Related link below); they offer them for the C30. If you have questions, you can ask the friendly folks in the customer service department. I bought sternrail seats for my C36, and positively love them! Best, Trevor

Best seat on the boat.

Vickie, I have a 1988 C30 and I purchased a pair of stern rail perch seats from this site two years ago. They are great. One thing I didn't like was that the support rests on the aft lazerette and makes opening it a hassle. I recently remedied that problem by angling the support so that it rests on the side coming instead of the lazerette cover. It was a simple fix. West marine sell the 60 degree fittings (and they have the same bolt pattern as the 90 degree fittings they replace. I had 2 1/2 inch diameter pucks made at Tap plastics out of 1 inch thick Seaboard. I used these pucks to attach the support to the coaming. See the attached picture. I bored holes in the pucks to accept the support tube and bolted the pucks to the coaming.

Better picture

Vickie, Here is second picture of the modified seat. Another benefit of theses perch seats is that it gives you a place to mount your cockpit sterio speakers without having to cut a hole in the boat.

Stern seat

The photos are great. I also have 1988 C30, and now want to add the seats, and plan to build them myself. I note the nice shape of the seats, and wonder if you felt any change in the size or outline of the seat would be an improvement? I like the way the support leg goes to the coaming and out of the way. I plan to use varnished teak for appearance [yes, I'm retired and have lots of time] Good sailing Ron B

Ron, Teak will look GREAT!

Ron, Seats made of varnished teak will look GREAT. The size and shape is just about perfect. Just make sure when you do yours to incorporate one of the best features .... the beer holders. Post pictures when you are done.

Stern seats

I have added varnished teak in other areas, and it does perk the boat up. In prep for the teak seats, I cut out a trial piece of 5/8 plywood, and experimented with the shape. I extended it over the stern section of the rail so that it has support on the back two sides from through bolting, with a curved third side forward. It looks like it will work without a leg under for support, or I hope so. I can always add one.I have cleats on the rear end of the coaming to make it easier to control jib sheets when single handing, and want to keep them clear. I'll let you know. Good sailing Ron B

built my own stern perch seats

I built stern perch seats for my C30 using a template supplied by someone else. The foot rests next to the stern compartment cover so there is no problem raising the cover. One of the best projects I've done for my C30!

Stern rail seats

I finished installing seats on the stern rail using teak and they work fine and look great. I used a one piece 12x24 inch wide plank, each side, that was carefully fitted to overlap the intermediate rail and through bolted with 5 -1/4 20 2" SS bolts. It is so well supported that no leg under is needed. The front edge is curved and rounded for comfort. The bolt heads are imbedded and covered with plugs, and several coats of varnish applied. The teak was $15 per foot or $60 and the bolts $8. I suppose starboard would work fine at much less cost. The whole project took an afternoon.A really good bit is needed to drill for the bolts. They make a neat perch, better than the big "bump" on the stern seat. [ Now that's a project to eliminate that I'd like to figure out.] Good sailing Ron B

I want to build my own too,

one problem I run into is that the mount for the dink motor is in the way. if the dink motor is stowed on the mount it would poke you in the back. any suggestion?

Stern rail seats

I put my 2hp engine on the standard rail mount on the port side and it does not interfere with using the seat. In fact when the engine is turned sidewise it gives some back support. I should mention that the seat I built is 12x24 and faced towards the cockpit with the 24" along the side rail. I don't know how the store bought version is located. I sit with my back to the side rail and it's very comfortable. There is also only 12" of seat to iterfere with seating on the cross stern seat[and no support leg] Now we are working on a fitted seat cushion. I could send a picture by email, but not sure about on this forum. RDBRASS@aol

Love them.

Got them through the chandlery last year and sat on them the entire season, on my '81 Catalina

Stern rail seats

We found that the upper rail was not too comfortable while sitting on our new seats. To cushion them, we found a soft plastic "noodle" kids use swimming, that has a hole through the center. When these are cut to length and split, they fit great over the rail and make a good cushion. There are also lots of bright colors to pick if you look around a bit. We also found that a standard throw cushion fits the seat well, and the handles can be tied off underneath so they don't go flying over the side. Good sailing Ron B LHP FL.
