Our new to us 23.5 has a gas (propane ) grill that mounts on the stern rail . I have seen these on boats for years and always wondered about safety . The outboard has an internal gas tank . I know it is out in the open but was just wondering how safe it is to have a propane grill going that close to a gas tank . Thanks Mike

It isn't safe! Why not mount the grill on the bow rail?

Lets not over react on this. I would do a temperature test on the gas tank with the grill on and then grill off. This will let you know without guessing if indeed you have a problem. My guess is no, unless you are within 2'. Chief

I have to agree with these other guys.If the tank is unkept or bad fuel conections with fumes coming up then that would be my only worry. The heat from the grill will rise.

Hope that was sarcastic,,,,never mount on the bow if anchored from the bow as the wind will blow sparks etc back into the boat. That's why you never use your grill in a slip. Changing wind can suddenly blow the fire down your companionway.

My propane grill doesn't put off sparks! I sure don't wait until I am under weigh to barbecue! The only problem at my marina for grilling is the extra people it attracts for dinner. Chief

Suggestion to mount the grill on the bow rail was not sarcastic. The grills are usually easy to attach/unattach, and a hot grill next to gasoline fumes is not my idea of a safe environment.

Glad your grill never flares up. Mine does often.....must be my technique:D

Naw, Larry, didn't The Admiral trim off the fat?

What are the chances of the gas tank being ABOVE the grille? Kinda like my earlier question about fumes...:)

I think caution is warranted, but preventing gasoline vapors is the objective before allowing ANY ignition source to be present. The primary ignition source is the outboard motor. Others would be cigarette smoking and use of any non-explosion proof electrical equipment. So, if you have a gasoline leak or spill...... don't start your outboard, smoke cigarettes, use non-rated electricals, citronella bug candles.... Or use your gas grill. I am being a tad "tongue-in-cheek", but hopefully, you catch my drift of using caution, but reason also. BrianW
