I was looking for a container to mount my LPG tank off the rear stern rails and i was shopping for the wfe and noticed a stainless steel garbage container .
I bought the container and cut the bottom to make the tank the right hight put a new plywod bottom on it with vent holes , it looks good even has a lid

How did you secure it to the boat?

Not secured yet but will use a stainless plate under can that extends to top of rear coaming and then fasten to rear rail

Please do post a picture(s) when you get the project completed. I want to get rid of the alcohol stove on my boat & have thought about installing a propane stove/oven for cooking & a bulkhead mounted heater. There's no propane locker on the boat & I was going to just put the tank on the rail exposed to the elements.

Thanks,
Bob

Remember that a full propane tank will weigh in at about 45 pounds. That and it will be a live load not dead weight if it moves at all. Consider the route for the fuel line.

We have two 6# tanks on our stern rail in holders. I made a sunbrella cover for them. When it quits raining, will take a picture.

As my boat is ove r800 miles away it will be a while before pictures are posted . Th dead weight will be carried by an L shaped bracket that fastens to the rear rail and sits on the top of the coaming , if I fell this is not enough I may add a bracket from the bottom of the compartment to the stern Asr running lines , the regulator and shutoff will be in the container and then run through my port locker and forward to were it will meet up with my existing stove and the line for the heater will run the other way which means all connections will be outside except for thos right at the appliance

A friend of mine built a starboard holder for his stern mounted tank, with support from the transom. He made sure to seal the openings where the hose entered the boat.

How about posting a picture?
Here's pics of our two 6" Worthington propane tanks mounted on our stern rail. You can buy the tanks & mounts at Amazon, West Marine and other places. I made a Sunbrella cover with zipper at top so we can turn on/off the regulator without removing the cover. Couple of velcro snaps makes for easy removal when tank needs to be refilled. One 6# tank lasts us 3-4 weeks and I do a lot of cooking on the boat.
