Stern Measurements

I am not near my boat currently and am looking for an estimated measurement for the flat portion of the stern at the very back. (Closest to the waterline.)

So in the attached image. I am looking for this rough measurement. Ultimately I am wanting to remove the previous owners boat name and put the new name and location of where we moor the boat.

Thanks!

Looks pretty similar to our 37. I don’t have the exact size, though I could probably measure on Friday. In any case there’s really not that much space there to make the name and hailing port legible. In our case we put the name toward the aft end of the topsides, under the pinstripe. We put the hailing port on the transom with what are probably about 3” or 4” letters.

I think we use 7.5” or 8” letters for the name.

While commercial boats have required size and location of name so that easy recognition is possible, recreational boats are given leeway to follow or not. Being able to identify a boat by name is a safety feature.

Key Letter Sizing Requirements

• Minimum Height: Letters and numerals must be at least 4 inches (101.6 mm) high.

• Stroke Width: The width of the stroke (line thickness) must be at least 3/8 inch (0.375 inches or 9.5 mm).

• Spacing:

• Between letters and numerals: At least 1/8 inch (0.125 inches or 3.2 mm).

• Between words (e.g., for the hailing port): At least 1 inch (25.4 mm).

• Color: Contrasting with the hull background (e.g., black on white hull or vice versa). No reflective materials.

• Positioning:

• Boat name on a horizontal plane, often above the hailing port.

• Hailing port below the name, with city and state separated by a diagonal line (e.g., “Miami FL”) or colon (e.g., “Miami:FL”).

• Font Style: Block-style lettering is recommended for visibility; script or cursive is allowed but must meet size and clarity standards.

These rules ensure visibility from a distance for identification purposes. They apply to vessels over 5 net tons engaged in commercial use or foreign trade, but most recreational documented boats follow them voluntarily or as part of documentation.

Transom is the identifying word you are seeking. So.. "Transom dimensions} might help a search if it comes to that. If you're ordering from a professional website or fabricator is possible they may have a database like sailmakers. Good luck.

Thanks for this information.

Based on the comments I will just put the hailing port on this space and will get the actual name/logo printed in a size that I can stick on on the upper part on the port side .

I am also getting a couple printed in a larger format for either side of the bow.

Thanks all, I appreciate the information and the responses.
