Any ideas on sterio speaker placement or type in the cabin of a 29.5? The sterio receiver is in the starboard cabinet just aft of the bow bunk.

We found....

That music on deck is a nice treat as well. I was reuctant to drill holes in my fiberglass in the cockpit area so I snaked the wiring along my wires for my knotmeter, depth sounder located on my pedestal. I simply "hose-clamped" the speakers to the stainless tubing. Another idea that I saw was that someone hose clamped them to the tubing under their dodger. That would be my first choice if I had one. I went with West Marine's 19.99/pr speakers. On third season and still OK. I have speakers below that cme with the boat. They are located above NAV station and by table. I have AM/FM/CD Jensen. I'm thinking of installing a 10 CD changer below the NAV table with remote, But that is down the line. There are more important things to get before that.

Stern rail seats...

I bought a set that I am going to try to mount under the stern rail seats. I am going to use box types with a bracket mount and use quick disconnects so I can take them off when I leave the boat. Inside, I am going to get some flat mounted ones for the bulkhead. I am also going to mount the stereo in the port bulkhead that has the V-berth closet behind it. This way, I can use the wireless remote from the cockpit. I got a Jensen unit with a changer. Guess I will have build up a shelf in the closet to hold these, but it ought to wrok pretty well. 320 is just about the same set up as a 29.5/290 as I recall?

This is what I did...

I placed the speakers in the port and starboard bulkhead on either side of the forward bunk. They were round speakers and fit just fine. I get good seperation... I also placed additional speakers below my feet in the battery box to starboard and the storage box to port.

Our 29.5 solution

We bought the Bose environmental speaker boxes (white) for around $300 and mounted them under the stern rail seats with a SS allen head capscrew fastened on top between the wood slats. The result was a very clean installation with no permanent large holes and the speakers are protected from the sun and rain. Down below we installed 2 of the reqular Bose speaker boxes (black)on the two small storage doors ajacent to the v-berth. I also added a pair of surface mounted tweeters above the v-berth speakers and a 10" subwoofer under the starboard shelf in the main berth. To my sense of hearing Bose speakers lack bass and highs. Yeah, a total of three amps so we are careful about usage. The sound is wonderful and when properly balanced between front and rear simulates a surround sound while sitting in the cockpit. Sorry I don't remember the model numbers. We did this 3 years ago and the system still sounds as a good as the first day it was installed. We have received many compliments.

Monty's wires?

Monty, that is my long range plan for exterior speakers! Spin the speakers forward while sailing, spin them aft while swimming off the back! Now the question-how did you run the wires from the cabin to the aft lockers?

Speakers & mounting for 29.5

I mounted my speakers on the Wind bottle holders by the v berth. I used JBL Control Ones. These are excellent Speakers and a typical car/boat radio will drive them with out any additonal power. These Speakers also have several differnt kinds of mounting hardware. If your are intrested in these speakers you can find them at any JBL dealer. They cost about $125 per

Andy..........

Hi Andy, I mounted the head unit on top of the motor which is not a great place when it rains but you can control it from the berth. I put the amps on the berth side of the head bulkhead because it is close to the batteries and ran the speaker wires under the shelf to the stern bulkhead and drilled holes above the access door and ran the wires up into the stern corner lazerettes through existing holes. From there it is a short distance to the speakers. I simply allow the lazerette doors to close on the wire near the hinges. I do not like to drill holes in fiberglass. I used Monster Cable speaker wires for residential construction that are white and are enclosed in a single jacket. The wiring to the wine doors was alot more difficult. I drilled through the head bulkhead and ran the wires in the storage cabinets to the hanging clothes closet. From there I was able to run the wires in the pvc conduit to the vberth. There is a pvc conduit on both sides running from stern to bow. You will see them if you open the chainplate inpection covers. Also, wires can be run across the ceiling in the structural fiberglass ribs. I added a Sony wired remote to the pedestal and keep it stored by removing the ice bucket. I hope this helps, Monty monty.miller@sematech.org
