Most don't ever..

Take the precautions of silica in the tape slot or leaving the deck on, to keep it warm & dry, while at the dock. I too have a large collection of "bootleg" cassette tapes, mostly live, but I have transferred them to digital so I can preserve the tapes integrity indefinitely by NOT playing them. If you are at a dock and can plug in leaving the deck in the on position is the best thing you can do as the heat from resistors and such will keep it dry and minimize oxidation of the cassette head. Either way, if you have a collection that is valuable to you, I would consider converting it to digital asap as every play of a tape reduces the quality... Yes it takes time to convert to digital but 30 years from now when you still have your music and it sounds the same you'll be glad you converted to digital and stored your tapes in a cool, dry place preserved...

Thanks for the conversion advice. Most of the tapes are pretty well played, but I have the playlist written down for each of them as well as the LP's they were recorded from (one pass only on a precision table with an elipical needle). To me, some of the bootleg tapes I've heard don't sound all that great either (no offense). If I ever get the time I'll probably re-transcribe from the original vinyl. Some old groups are now appearing on CD in remastered form, so all may not be lost. I just found a Troggs CD so a Moby Grape or Country Joe could eventually show up as well.
