stepping up mast hunter 19

I think I will be able to step up the mast with two people using the jib halyard and the mainsheet as a pulley
the mast raising pole however does not lock into place in the hole in the front of the mast
so I have had problems lowering the mast without this pole
any suggestions?

I dont see why you need a pole to lower, just do the opposite of raising. At least thats what we do with the 18' beach cats. Those masts couldnt be much lighter or shorter than on the H19. Lowering we were just a bit more careful, as we didnt want to loose control and drop it on a car, or bystander. We do use a 6' ladder to raise the mast from, and lower it to, just to take the force off the initial lifting.
