Catalina 22 sacramento
OK folks..... first time for me lowering mast on my newly aquired O'Day 25. Have to trailer it home for cleanup. I formerly had a Catalina 22 so I am not that new to sailboats..... just new to O'Day. My question is: when lowering mast... there is a front and rear pin securing the mast. If I remove the forward pin from the mast and the forestay.... then the mast will pivot back on the rear pin and rest on the stern pulpit. I can then remove the forward pin and secure the bottom of the mast to the bow pulpit for trailering. Do I have the procedure close to being correct?? Thanks in advance

stepping mast

jon shows the mast being raised/lowered forward which may mean that something is in the way on the coach roof if lowered aft like you stated, and done just like the cat. if it is necessary to raise forward, i would build a mast support on the trailer to support the mast further out than the bow rail to better balance the mast. forward sure looks harder than aft.

forward or back

hey, I have a 23. When raising or lowering the mast you can go either way. It is not to heavy to manhandle up from the rear if I have someone to pin the mast in. You can use the winches in the cockpit to lower or raise the mast if you do not like straining. This site has a page where this procedure is detailed.

try a gin pole

Kenny, the process you describe is correct. I lower the mast on my Oday 23 aft. I leave all shrouds but the forestay attached. If your jib halyard is long enough, you can attach it the the stem head fitting, put a couple of wraps on the winch on the mast and cleat it off. Pull the forward pin in the mast step, detach the forestay and lower away, keeping tension on the jib halyard as you go. If you need to pause for anything you simply cleat the halyard off to stop the process. Two people can easily lower the mast this way (one handles the halyard while the other keeps the mast centered, which eventually lands on the pushpit. Then I pull the other pin in the step and walk the mast forward to the pulpit. The mast rests on the pulpit and pushpit, with a short crutch in the mast step to support the middle. You reverse the process the raise the mast. There are two methods you can use for some mechanical advantage during this process: a gin pole or A frame. I rigged a gin pole last fall and it worked pretty well. The real test will be when I use it to raise the mast this spring. Good Old boat has a good article on their webb site on this topic and small craft advisor had a good primer a couple of years ago.

page is here

Go to the home page at odayowners.com, click on the more fun section, click on boat manuals and documentation, scroll to the bottom. There is a pdf file there for the mast raising system for a 25 but it also works for a 23 Good luck
