I need advice on stepping the mast. I can take the mast down OK, but I am short and so is all my crew. We follow the owners manual but get to a point where we have no leverage and needed a tall strong guy to push it up. I know there is a way to change the leverage at that critical point using a "gin pole" (sorry about the spelling if it is wrong). Can I rig one on the mast or the deck or even on the trailer frame? I would appreciate any advice and if possible pictures or diagrams. Or any advice on making stepping the mast easier and me independent of help. Thanks.

Mast raising system

If the link doesn't work, search the photo forum for H23 mast raising systems and you will find a beauty designed by Peter Suah. Works very, very well.

Mast raising

I know lots of people use a mast raising system and there is lots of info in the archives, several years ago I made a plank that goes from the top of the transom to the cabin top , I simply put the mast on my shoulder and walk up the plank, it is as safe and simple as any system you will make, might be faster too if that is an issue , there used to be some things in the archives about this, if not and you have an interest let me know and I can be more specific, take care Mike Bacome

jin pole

A jin pole is a verticle pole that goes from the horizontal mast, near the base where it sits like a saddle and runs up about 7 feet high with a couple eye bolts at the top where you attach the jib halyard and another line running through a block at the bow. You run that line back to the winch and crank her up. I also have "crabbing poles to stabilize the mast sideways. They look something like Peter Suah's "jin pole" but they attach at the mast to keep it from falling sideways. Sorry I don't have a picture. I'll try to get one tomorrow and post it. Mike's plank idea is a great one. I also use that. I can step my mast by myself with all these gadgets. But I usually have help for insurance.

pic of poles

Here's a pic of the jin pole and crabbing poles. Note the jin pole has 2 eye bolts at the top to tie lines on opposite sides. The base of my jin pole I fabricated from a sheet of steel and padded it with rubber. It fits around the base of the mast. The crabbing poles have lines at the bottom for tying off to the stantion bases. The top is a piece of PVC pipe about 6 inch diameter that I cut to clamp around the mast. I hope this helps.
