A seemingly simple question. The steering wheel on my 35.5 is a very large diameter. What is the effect of switching to a smaller diameter wheel. Has anyone out ther done this on a 35.5? FM s/v M Squared

Less mechanical advantage!

Fred: By changing the wheel to a smaller diameter, you will loose some of your mechanical advantage. It will be harder to steer in heavy wind. You should try to find someone in the marina with a smaller wheel and just try it. Be sure you try it when the wind is blowing about 20-25 to get the full effect.

And ...

Steve is right and ... depending on how much smaller you go you will lose the ability to sit up on the high side (or the low side if you prefer) and steer with the wheel. it is tricky setting up a hiking stick on a wheel steered boat. But if you have an autopilot with a remote --- hmmmm. Good sailing Bill Murray SV Good Faith H29.5 #175
