Steering well drain

I have a 1998 Catalina 30 MkIII with Edson wheel steering. I recently pulled the steering well cover from the cockpit floor and found it nearly full of water and severe corrosion on the quadrant and cable sheaves. I cleaned everything up and flushed the drain line but it would not drain completely, leaving about 3" or so standing. Using a carpenters level and measuring tape, I discovered that the drain outlet in the transom was 2.75" above the drain inlet in the steering well. Has anyone out there encountered this problem??

C30MkIII

Hi Fred: I have a 1996 MKIII and it retains a little water, it is less than an inch. If you bought it new, I would talk to the dealer, otherwise, you could seal up the drain with fiberglass and redrill the drain hole a little lower. Good luck, Dave S/V Westwind

Bad drain

Hi Guys I have a C30 1989 same thing here.Last year I removed my deck cover and then I found out where that nasty stain behind my swim ladder was comeing from . I also found my deck cover was all rotted . My rudder had to come off .and the bolts where stuck(BIB TIME) So I snaped them off with a big 1/2" drive socket and my emergence tiller anty way I have a sailing hound dog and her hair and other stuff gets down there from around the hatch cover and cloges the small drain hole. what I did is inlarge the hose and throw hull to 11/4 hose. I drilled the new throw hull from the top of the existing 3/4 'hose hole down an extra 1/2" to gain more pitch on the hose . then cleaned the rudder box real good . Now I wash the rudder box every time out by flushind afresh water hose in throw the exit Hole it only takes a minit and the force of the water cleans exit hose from dog hair and junk. The water presher will push out more stuff then will come out with rain water and the junk wont leak out and stain the gellcoat on the hull. It workes for me. John Olson
