Has anyone ever seen this kind of wheel steering system on a C27, the one on the right side for inboard rudders? I'm considering something like this as it is less intrusive than a normal pedestal steering system and leave more cockpit room. You won't be able to stand behind it but I'm not sure that matters. You would have to have a small wheel but that would be OK too. Any downsides?

The gear and fabrication costs outweigh any benefit to having a bit more room in the cockpit while under way. Performance wise, on a boat that size the tiller is far superior....

Besides the somewhat oldfashioned look you'd end up with, the mounting and enclosure will protrude into the cockpit, taking up your valuable space even more than you gain by removing the tiller. A pedestal would have the mechanics under the cockpit floor. This deal tees directly off the rudder shaft, which means you'd bolt it on top.... assuming you don't want to cut into the shaft housing.

What you might consider is a vertical tiller....or whipstaff set up.... check this out: http://www.wavetrain.net/boats-a-gear/330-etap-yachts-surviving-the-2012-apocalypse-and-bankruptcy
