Has anyone tightened up their steering cable on an O'day 39/40? Does the LP tank storage locker need to come out for access? or were you able to wiggle in there to tighten up the turnbuckle? I have a generator directly under the steering wheel, I attempted to wiggle in there but was unsuccessful. It appears that the next try would include removing the LP gas storage locker to gain direct access? Any input would be appreciated. "Sail La Vie"

I think the best way to tighten the steering cables is to go through the quarter berth. First remove the screws holding the hinges for the engine access in the quarterberth and then remove the panel at the aft end of the quarterberth. This gives you pretty good access. Youy can also check your port propane locker drain hose from here as well as your manual bilge pump hoses and cockpit scupper hoses. The problem with removing the propane lockers themselves is that they are held in place with not only screws, but sealant. If you remove them you'll have to recaulk them otherwise you'll get lots of water leaking into either your quarterberth or lazarette. I have two Oday 34's and a 35 and feel this is the best way!

Thanks for the replies. Project is done. In the 39, best/only access is by removing the LPG tank locker as initially advised. Also, each boat is slightly different. If my generator was not in the way, myabe I could have done this without removing the locker. (which was not a big deal). By the way-Edson advises anual inspections--take their advice...
