Steering Problems

I've recently purchased a 1990 Catalina 28 and had it hauled for bottom painting. After launching the boat is pulling hard to port when I get above 1200 rpm. I found the brake on the Edson steering column was loose and tightened it until the pulling stopped. Is this normal or should I be looking for some other cause?

prop wash

That is normal behavior. My 1990 C28 does the same thing as does the newer MKII's you could buy new today. You'll get used to it. =) Just keep the pier on the port side when docking as much as possible and you'll have no problems. It's really a great boat. I'm in my second season in Hull #7. It's my first boat and I'm having a great time in it. Mike Elmore DuSable Harbor-Chicago, IL Windward Hull C28-Hull #7

Normal Prop Walk

Larry, You are just feeling the normal prop walk that all boats without special props have. The stern walks to starboard going forward and port in reverse. Get used to it, anticipate it, and you can even use it to your advantage for tight turns. For example when you are going forward and need to make a sharp U turn allways turn to port and the prop walk will walk the stern around for you. Also remember it when pulling into a dock because when you hit reverse to slow down your stern will swing to port. Stan "Christy Leigh" c320 #656
