Mine is an "84 with a weakening cockpit pedestal. The base is corroding, mainly at one quarter of the rim, but proceeding toward the pipe-stand in such fashion that if it continues for a year or two(?) it could get us it serious trouble. (It moves only a little at the wheel, under a good bit of a push.) I'ver been looking unsuccessfully for a replacement base, and may have to resort (ugh) to manufacturing one myself. Any experience or advice with this problem out there??

I refinished mine....

Not sure if you mean it has corroded thur the metal or if we are talking surface corroding. Mine had some deep corrosion, but mostly surface. I removed mine from the boat, sanded the offending areas, filled gaps with thicken epoxy, sanded smooth, gave the entire unit a light sanding with 200 or 400 grit wet dry paper, then coated it with a yellow primer from WM or BoatUS made for alum. alloy. To make painting easier, I put the pedestal on a long rod, like a broom stick, hung this horizontally in such a fashion that I could spin the pedestal while I painted. Then followed with a white marine grade paint for the finish, still using the spin technque which allowed me to paint very evenly. When a run tried to appear, I would turn pedestal putting the run on the top and it would flow out. Result... look like a brand new pedestal when finished. Hope this helps.

Pedestal

What brand is your pedestal? Mine isn't an Edson, It's a Yacht Specialties. They are no longer produced, but can still be found on Ebay once in a while. I was lucky and got a used spare one with my boat and refinished it. It was off of a fresh water boat and was super clean. I talked with the Edson guys at Strictly Sail and they said that I could replace the pedestal and parts within with Edson parts and keep the rudderstock parts from the Yacht Specialties steering intact. I don't know if this helps, but it's worth looking into.
