Steering Pedestal Placement

I am getting ready to install wheel steering in my 272. Perusing the instructions, I see that there is some leeway in placing the pedestal more forward or aft in the cockpit. I never considered it, so I thought I would ask here for advice.

What considerations, advantages, disadvantages should be recognized in the placement of the pedestal? What is the position on the 272LE?

Thanks,

Andrew

I can measure the wheel location from the aft end of the cockpit this week....I can also
send you a picture of my teak helmsmans seat if you like....someone on this website already has it from a few weeks ago though...I try and check who I sent it to...I'll measure that as well......good luck, Patrick

Sounds good, Pat. I would love to see your setup! My boat comes out of the water by the end of October. I will plan to install the steering asap, so I can solve any problems that arise.

Thanks,

Andrew

1. I love working on my boat.
2. I wanted a wheel steer boat when we upgraded from our C22, but this boat was a good deal.
3. I found a new-in-box 272 LE wheel steer upgrade kit from a past dealer. He had it in his warehouse for 25 years, and he sold it to me for 1985 prices. I could not pass that up!
4. The tiller swings a wide arc in the cockpit. With company, I am swinging it into someone's midsection to come about. The wheel takes up room, but it stays put.
5. My wife is new to boating. She does not feel comfortable with a tiller. The push left to turn right, etc thing bothers her. I want to do whatever I can to make it more comfortable for her.
6. I can mount a pedestal guard and have a drink holder, a fold-down table, and instruments conveniently located in the cockpit.

These are my reasons!

Thanks,

Andrew

Andrew I had to chuckle when I read your list. My wife is very similar to yours. She has been sailing for about 12 years and hates the tiller. Says she has to think too much. LOL! Our Ericson 30+ had the wheel and she loved being at the helm. Says it was like driving a semi. Interesting description:) Myself on the other hand like the tiller because of the feel. If we ever upgrade again to a bigger boat we will have a wheel.

A few months ago we were going to purchase a brand new Jeanneau 349 with dual wheels and live on it. Just wasn't the right time instead bought a house. Too many animals for the boat. My wife salivated with the idea of having two wheels. Funny stuff.

Cant wait to see your helm. Please share as many photos as possible.Marta Sailing.jpg

What a great project!! I just replaced the chain/cable component after the chain broke while out sailing. Be sure you retain some kind of a backup system. That's likely part of the kit you purchased.
I am still bruised from contorting my body into the areas to access the rudder pinion area. That's on a 39. I'm very interested to see how you go about this on a 272. Please post lot's of pictures. I think you made a wise choice. It will free up a lot of space in your cockpit.
Distance fore and aft: This is a very big decision. My wheel is very far back allowing enough room to stand at the wheel but no more. Followings Pat's measurements is wise if his was factory installed. O'day may have placed it there for some access reasons. Something you can't foresee.
Here are a few tips that may or may not be helpful.

Huge loads on the pedestal in rough seas (people holding on / falling). O'day used 5200 to bond the pedestal to the cockpit floor. I replaced the aluminum bolts that where corroded badly. The floor would have come up with the pedestal had I tried to remove it. Big backup plates!!

Be sure the base of the pedestal is sealed well to prevent leaks

Run lots messengers up the pedestal guard for later wiring projects.

Good luck with the control cables (very little room to work inside the pedestal)

Check the rudder bearing before you start. Great time to get it back in shape.

Make plans for attachment point for harness tethers generally at the base of the pedestal.

Don't pay to have the compass compensated until you try doing it yourself. I found compensating the compass relatively quick and easy but I did not require it be super precise since I have so many GPS instruments. I use the compass to pass course changes to pilots. One or two degs is not an issue for me.
Cockpit tables are the greatest but very expensive.

good luck

Andrew, did you receive any of the pictures? I'm thinking you did not as I had an error message from Cox that stated the
file size was too big for my server...this because I tried to copy myself.....let me know today if possible and I'll resend in a couple emails.....Good luck....

Guys I am no expert on pedestal location but I do know that I would not want to move it after it was installed with a few holes in my cockpit floor. In that light I hope you don't mind a few comments.
30 some inches sounds like a long way away from the back of the cockpit. Please look at the C&C photos attached. There is one looking down at the space between the back of the cockpit and the wheel. It's not more than 14 inches. About the same as my O'day 39.
Again , As I stated farther up the thread. If you are looking at a factory installed pedestal by all means follow that same measurement. If not, please look at a few more boat in the marina and possibly sit behind the wheel.

Good luck with the project. Please post pictures when you are done.

No. Not yet. We have been busy with work and the holidays. We are now going on a sailing charter with BWSS in St. Thomas. We hope to get to some of the boat work in February, but the cold weather may make us wait. I have some epoxy to do, so the wheel project may have to wait til April.
