I will like to install a tubing guard on the boats steering pedestal so I may hang a chart plotter and a small table and drink holder. The pedestal is factory installed 20 years old. I don't have the manufacturers name with me. has anyone done this and would you know where to get the holding plate and the tubing. Any recommendations and things to watch out for will be appreciated. Thanks Benny "CARIBE"

Pedestal Guard for the Merriman Pedestal
Benny We have the same boat, and I installed an Edson pedestal guard successfully. (Haven't purchased the table yet, man they are expensive!). Anyway, we bought ours from West Marine. It is an older model of Edson. The West Marine part number is 2643203, and the price is about $200.00. Ours is a little different looking than the picture of that part number online, but I don't think it will matter much for you. The installation was a piece of cake for me, mainly because I was also replacing the fuel tank and I had plenty of room to work under the deck with the tank out. So that might be more difficult for you. Try coming in from the back through the stern locker too, that might work. Or just take the tank out? Anyhow, it fit fine around the Merriman pedestal. The only thing that is not perfect is that the throttle lever touches the pedstal guard's bracket slightly, but only when it's in full throttle position. So we just let it touch. Good luck to you. Benny: It is probably an Edson pedestal. They originally had two mounting plates. You need to be careful because the 9.5" one may not allow your mounting feet to attach properly on the cockpit sole. The larger one which is probalby 11.5" is a little wide for a small cockpit. (not sure about the exact sizes). Another option is to have some pieces fabricated so the legs attach to the pedestal instead of the cockpit sole.

Ron: The reason that your throttle lever touches the pedestal guard is because you have it in the wrong position. It is suppose to be UNDER the levers. You have it installed in the higher position.

I am going to do the same. I have the Y.S. pedestal. I have disassembled the pedestal and looked at the bolt patterns. There are two option IMHO: 1. It seems to me that if you put it above the shift/throtle levers, you can use the Edson top plate as shipped and have the levers bump. the bolt paterns match exactly. My thought there was to have a machine shop remove a bit of the top plate to make room. 2. If you put it below the shift levers (where it really belongs), four additional holes have to be drilled. I am not sure that there is enough space for them given the shape of the center cutout of the Edson top plate. I am guessing that there is at least enough to keep it centered and support the guard adequately. Additionally, you may have to do a little machining to make room for the aft portion of the throrle linkage. When I can get this i the budget, I will post pictures Chuck S/V Following Sea
