Here is a new new video I just completed for Ocean Navigator Magazine and Edson Marine. It covers the basics of maintaining the pedestal end of a chain and cable steering system. Hope it is help to someone.

Nice video - thanks for sharing. I was wondering if you plan on doing a follow-up video that focuses on inspection/maintenance of the cables below deck that run to the rudder.

Yes there are 2 more planned. The first for the lower end which is shot I just need to edit it and another for interfacing autopilots. I also plan one for my own channel on rudder maintenance. I will post those as well.

Fantastic! Again, thanks for doing these.

Two quick questions:

First re: the lubricants - is there any risk of adding too much lubricant in any of the locations you showcase?
Second - how much time would you allocate for this type of maintenance work?

You do not want too much lubricate as it can collect dirt. this is particularly true with the wire cable as dirt will get in the wire shortening its life. I would suggest this be done once a year or so depending on how much you use your boat and before any major cruise. You will be surprised at how much better your steering "feels" after doing this.

Thank you Capt. Wayne, that was a great video.
If I remember you also did a great video on thru hulls and backing plates. Awlsome free hand work with a jig saw.

So is it better to use oil to lubricate the chain or you can use grease too?
Just asking because usually I use grease for the chain and a little bit of oil for the cable.

PS: OK, I admit for a bicycle chain (!) we use oil but I never though of using it for boats too...

Edson recommends 30 weight oil. You want the oil to be able to get into the chain rollers, not sure grease would do that.

One old trick I've done for an ailing chain is to melt the grease and pour on it. It'll work better if you can get the whole chain down into the grease before it 'hardens', at least that is what I've been told. I just pour a little on across it. I'm talking about AILING chains, new ones benefit from the 30w better..

Wayne I wish I knew you were on pedestal duty, I redid five of those things last year. I got to calling it The Year of the Pedestal.

Do you know where those dropped cotter pins go? Pedestal Hell. The lake of fire that exists under it, you know..

How do you feel about sticking a rag down in the pedestal to catch any bolts or pins in case one is dropped?

Nice video. 35 years on two-wheelers and lots of drive chain maintenance. In the early days we stripped the chain, cleaned it in kerosene and dipped into a can of melted axle grease. Like Chris P. describes. Hang the chain, let it cool and wipe it down with a clean rag. Reassemble. In later days with o-ring chain there was much less work. I particularly like the spray chain lubes like Bel-Ray that go on liquid, penetrate, provide a cleaning action and then set up to a white-lithium coating that prevents corrosion. That is what I use now, a spray motorcycle chain lube. And my steering chain / cable system is much easier to access and maintain than the Edson system. Cables get the Boeing P-9, great corrosion protective spray lube.

tough question aldogo
how many folks do you sail with?
do you need a head?
how long do you think you will be staying on the boat at any one time (fresh and black water tankage)
My personal opinion is to buy the boat you need and then learn while you sail it. If you buy a boat to learn on (presumably a simpler boat with fewer controls and amenities) you will be looking for the next boat after a very short time. Sailing is not that hard and there are lots of books and classes out there to get you started.

You posted this in a thread on steering system maintenance.
You will probably get a lot better response if you create your own thread with a subject that is appropriate for the question you are asking.
