Steering chair

I have a 1985/86 34' Hunter, and the steering chain that essentially runs from the wheel, inside the pedistal, to the rudder broke and fell down inside the aft cabin area somewhere. I'm assuming one of the chair links broke or gave way. My question is what is involved in getting it wrapped up around the steering gear at the top of the pedistal, and to install a new link? In advance, thanks for your input.

Hi Richard, I'm not familiar with your model, but...

our H28 pedestal well was sealed from the aft cabin. So no chain can drop down inside the boat, but instead is probably piled up at the base of your pedestal. Our H28 pedestal was pretty easy to remove, first by loosening the steering cable at the quadrant, then removing the four flat head bolts that secure the pedestal to the cockpit sole. Terry

If it's an Edson...

...then it doesn't look too complicated. I have an '88 legend 37 and if you remove the compass, it doesn't look too bad. Check your's out!

Been there

Personally I would classify this as a four beer job. The ceiling cover of your aft cabin has to come off with a screw gun. The the compass comes off the top. The chain hooks to wires that go around pulleys. Perhaps the wire came off the pulley because it was in need of a simple tension adjustment. Have fun

if that's your pedestal, and they have very good technical information. As the other folks mentioned, you're gonna have to take a bunch of stuff apart. You should also find out why it broke in the first place to avoid or minimize a recurrence. It's doable, might need a helper for the finial insertion of the new chain...
