Steering Cable Slack?

I have a 2004 260 with Edson wheel steering. It seems as though the steering cable has too much slack in it. I measure almost 3 inches each way from center. I’m wondering if this is acceptable, in tolerance, not to worry or it needs to be tightened. If indeed it does need to be tightened, I really can’t figure a simple way to do it without taking the floor cover up –assembly and all. Any constructive input on this is greatly appreciated. “Wave Dancer” Sails out of Palm Beach inlet Fl.

steering slack

Thats too much slack. Open the lazarette and down by the fuel tank are the steering cables. With the steering centered there should be no noticable slack in those cables. Obviously you don't want them guitar string tight either. The adjustment for the cables is on the lever on the rudder post. Two 7/16" nuts per cable, one is the adjustment nut and the other is a jam nut to lock the adjustment.

If you have a steering quadrant...

...then wheel adjustments can be made there. At the point where the cable attaches inside the quadrant track, there are two adjustment screws (one port, one stbd). These can be evenly tightened to keep the rudder on the centerline and remove the slack.

Edson? You are in Luck!

Edson has probably the best on-line support setups for a boat component that I've ever seen. Check out their FAQ section and you'll find your answer. FAQ Index: http://www.edsonmarine.com/faq/index.html For your question start with FAQ #9. While you're at it, you should get The Edson "Steering Data Sheet" appropriate for your boat. This has all the Edson "Part Numbers" for your components. Then get the Edson Pedestal Maintenance Guide. In there, under "STEERING WIRE TENSION" they tell you EXACTLY what to do. So there you have it. I could reprint it here but you'll never get all the rest of their good information if I just gave you that part.
