Howdy,

Had the steering cable on our Catalina 309 come off the rudder fly wheel today at the worse possible moment (entering marina with 20 knot tailwind). Putting it back on seems simple enough, but I don't know the mechanism for loosening and tightening the cable. Can someone explain how to do this? Pictures of what I am talking about attached.

there are some eye bolts on the quadrant (the one you call a fly wheel) that have to be loosened in order to reload the cables on the forward shives and the quadrant then when you get it loaded tighten them back up there is a web site from edson that describes how to do this under installation

ps make sure your cables don't have any broken strands or kinks

Thanks Woody. I found the installation pdf. Unfortunately, there are broken strands so I suppose I must replace the cable. Is that something I can do, or does it take a specialist?

How do I get to the connection points between the cable and chain? The installation/maintenance document doesn't detail that. Thanks.

you have to remove the compass and it will be below that ......read edsons installation instructions 3 or 4 times when you are able to think only about that subject and it will become clear to you ...when you remove the compass put and index mark on the base of the compass and the mounting base ...maybe even 2 or 3 won't hurt

You may not have to remove your compass on the C309 as we have a different pedestal than most edson products. Try access by removing the instrument panel. If I remember right there are 6 screws holding the panel. Catalina put sealant on the edges of mine so be careful not to break the plastic panel. I used a thin putty knife break the sealant around the edges of the panel. Check the owners manual as there is some info on this panel in my manual. I hope you made back into your slip OK.
