steering cable adjustment question

Don't know exactly how it is set up, but an excellent resource is Edson's own web site. They have a plethora of info about proper maintenance, servicing, parts, etc. of their helms available. I think what you can find there is better than anything I could write here.

Look at the quadrant area and you will see where the cable attachés to turnbuckles or at least thats how its on my Oday and a friends Catalina and like JN said Edson is a great company to get information in fact you can get the plans showing all components for your system

Another thought: so, the steering is a little loose. This could be due to wear, such as with pulleys, pulley axels, maybe stretch in the cable, or...... a loose cable clamp!
If a cable clamp is loose this could allow the steering cable to pull out and result in total failure; i.e., no steering.

It's the beginning of the season (at least for some lucky people), not too hot yet, so this is probably a good time to get in there and check everything out, replace worn parts, make adjustments, and lube everything up.

You can adjust it according to the Edson web site as given in the previous post, but if that does not fix the looseness you may have a worn rudder tube. I had this problem on my C30. Adjusting the cable tension on the steering mechanism did not solve the problem. According to Catalina, the rudder tube wear is common and can be fixed by making shims from mylar film and inserting the shims into the rudder tube. They sent me instructions on how to do it. I don't have them with me but will look for them when I get back to my main computer.
I was spring cleaning Sunday under the aft cabin bed where the steering quadrant and associated sheaves tucked away out of site near the starboard quarter and noticed fine brass dust from the cable rubbing on the side of the sheave, now the 64,000 dollar question is,has this been like this for 30 years or did I do something different when I removed the steering pedestal a couple of years back.
I'm thinking maybe I over tightened the cable so this new project is added to the top of the spring commissioning list
