Another thought: so, the steering is a little loose. This could be due to wear, such as with pulleys, pulley axels, maybe stretch in the cable, or...... a loose cable clamp!
If a cable clamp is loose this could allow the steering cable to pull out and result in total failure; i.e., no steering.

It's the beginning of the season (at least for some lucky people), not too hot yet, so this is probably a good time to get in there and check everything out, replace worn parts, make adjustments, and lube everything up.
