I have steering problems...seems like if I tighten the cables, it binds at certain points, badly. If I loosen it, the cable comes off. I purchased this boat taken appart. Maybe I installed the cables incorrectly...but I don't think so. When I hooked up the first time it steered backwards since the cables from the chain ends came out directly parallel all the way to the alum wheel above the rudder. now I crossed them before the 2 pulleys (within the pedestal) and it does not steer backwards anymore. I suspect the binding is within the rudder shaft. Has anyone been through this delemma??? also, the adjustment shafts I placed on the alum wheel without crossing them and positioned the nuts so to sandwidge the alum between them. I expect any other way would make no differance but who knows. Thanks, Bob

What make is the Pedestal?

This will come in handy because someone might have the steering unit schematic in their files that can be sent to you. I have an Edson schematic at home.

I have a 28.5 and my cables aren't crossed...

Remove the cables and turn the quadrant by hand to see if the binding is in the rudder post. The cables run straight down the pedestal, thru the truning block and back to the quadrant. You most likely have them crossed in the pedestal to have to cross them again below. Good luck.

remember that the cables go around...

the back side of the quadrant before they attach to it.

Merriman Wheel grabs tight

I just returned from an evening sail in which I discovered a significant issue with my Merriman Wheel Steering. When I steer "hard over" to port the wheel grabs VERY tight and won’t allow it to return without excessive force. Made for a challenging return into the slip! Does anyone know where to get a schematic of an 1985 Hunter / Merriman steering pedestal? Any guidance on an overhaul? Bruce

Rudder Tube Wear

I'd be surprised if the original installation were the problem as the rudder tube is glassed into the plywood bulkhead behind it. Pull from the steering cables can also cause accelerated wear on the forward inside edge of the rudder tube, but most likely, the additional layers of fiberglass cloth on the top edge of the rudder closed up some of the clearance to the underside of the hull.
