steel hull

worms dont eat a steel hull, it doesn't break or crack like fbg or wood, and if you are a welder, you can repair it yourself!....Pam

Steel hulls

You will hear from a lot of nay-sayers with horror stories about fighting rust. Disregard them - proper design details, surface prep, modern materials and application techniques can eliminate all such problems. You maintain paint, not steel. From about 40-45 ft. up, there is nothing that can compete with steel or aluminum.

If fiberglass was all that hot, the navy

If fiberglass was really that hot a commodity, then the Navy would have fiberglass Destroyers, Frigates, Air Craft Carriers, etc. If steel is good enough for the Navies of the world, and commercial ships, then its good enough for you.

price vs use

How many of us could afford a steel 30 foot sailboat. The cost would be prohibative, choice would be reduced, and I am not sure overall safety would be improved. Fiberglass boats have been sailing every where in the world for 30-40 years. With the right construction methods I think that makes a pretty track record. The goverment is building a boat for a specific use and steel meets that need. During WW2 the Navy built plywood boats and I don't ever want one of those. Each type of material has advantages and disadvantages depending upon application. It is up to the sailor to make that choice and I am glad that choice is avalaible to me. Of all of the steel boats I have been on there is none I would want to own and go to sea withg, maybe crash into a reef with. Not all sailors need a boat that can take a torpedo hit and still sail.

Been there..done that

My first sailboat was a 37' steel boat.Homebuilt I bought it about 10 years ago. I spent as much time chipping and painting the rust in the Spring as my friends did compounding and waxing. One point is to make sure there is enough insulation in the hull condinsation can be a problem. Good luck

My two bobs worth

Well I just delivered a yacht from up North to Perth Western Australia and of course was caught out in a storm. Eight metre swells breaking on top. Slamming into the side of her. Swinging 180 with the odd one. Mmmm Steel hull. No concerns. GRP not so sure. Not in those conditions anyway!

Steal has both pro’s and con’s If I was planning a Circumnavigation Steal would be at the top of my list. Don’t let the nay sayers convince you that rust is a major problem, with the new primers used in Metal boat construction rust is not a real concern. Here is a site that run by a marine architect that specializes in Steal, By the time you finish reading his site you will have a better understanding of steal boat construction. They even have CNC CUT kits that are beautiful. I probably spent the better part of 2 weeks studying his designs. make sure to read his article on choices of building material http://www.dixdesign.com/material.htm http://www.dixdesign.com/articles.htm http://www.dixdesign.com/kits.htm
