I am confused? I have a 1981 Hunter 36, HIN HUN36079M810. Who designed my boat Cortland Steck or John Cherubini? Sailboatdata.com is confusing me. This boat works great for me in the Santa Barbara channel. I easily passed my neighbor's really nice benateau in light winds the other day.

John designed it. Steck got the credit for it. 1980 was the time John was chief architect for Hunter and Steck was up and coming. Hunter was planing succession to John's legacy. Steck was a young mechanical engineer / naval architect(graduated in from New York Institute of Tech in 1976) who then went on to Westlawn School of Yacht Design and graduated in 1979. How much real design work could really have done for Hunter. By granting Steck a "by line", it upped his credibility even if he was borrowing someone else's work. I am more than certain John was not happy with what Hunter had done.

New boat for you? Or just finally got curious about the Cherubini mystique after owning the Angel Light for a while?
If a new owner and you are a DIY sort, lots of information here on about just about anything that you might want to know about construction, maintenance and repair specific to these models.
Copies of the original sales/promotion brochure and owners' manuals are also buried in the forum archives if you don't have them (but want).
The Cherubini Hunter 36 also performs well in the screaming winds frequent on San Francisco Bay's "The Slot" and Sausalito's "Hurricane Gulch". Of course as with any boat, reefing is often necessary to keep things manageable. The other day, with 25kts winds average, my GPS was recording +/- 7.5 kts both directions across the bay with the mainsail on the 2nd reef and my 135 genoa furled to maybe 90% size. There was some weather helm to fight during the higher gusts, but otherwise generally very well balanced. I know my boat isn't the fastest thing on the bay, but I have been very pleased -- almost seven years now. I've sailed with friends on recent model "main brand" boats of 36-38 feet over the last few years. After the outings, I don't feel even the slightest twinge of new boat envy.
