I have just purchased a 1980 Catalina 25 and I tested all of my lights last evening. All are working except for the steaming light (the one on the spreader). Due to the age of the boat, I assume it is not just the bulb. I checked in the Catalina Direct catalog and I don't see anything that would work if I have to replace it. Has anyone had to replace the light? Looks like I am going up in the bosun chair...

I literally just had the same problem the other day on my 84 C25. I took the deck plug and cleaned it with some contact cleaner and some plumbers grit cloth. I used a multimeter at the deck plug part to verify I was getting power and used a 9 volt battery on the mast side to make sure the bulbs weren't blown. I had both so I knew it was a connection problem. I'd verify that your bulb is blown or that there is a wiring issue before hopping in that chair.

My C27 is getting hauled out for a bottom job either this week or the next. The marine operator asked me if I prefered having the mast taken down before taking it across the street. I replied, HELL NO, all the lights are working now, sure as hell they won't work again if we start unplugging ancient plugs and 27 year old wiring. From my C22 days I'd bet your plug is the culprit. My final "solution" involved a solar light installed up there that was on every night, except when it was cloudy.

I just unscrewed the deck plug and cleaned up the contacts real good using some grit cloth or sandpaper and some contact cleaner, then I held the negative side of the 9 volt to the ground which is the fatter of the three prongs on the mast plug and then touched the positive terminal to each of the hot prongs one at a time. I had a helper look for the anchor light but the steamer is right above you when you do this. If I was gonna do it again I'd fashion some short wire leads to each terminal on the battery so you can just touch them to the appropriate terminal.
