Hi all,
I'm cleaning up my 79 H33 and need to thoroughly clean the seat cushions and "carpet" on the walls. I have a steam cleaner at home that has a hand tool attachment I was thinking about using. Obviously, it's all going to have to be dried out very well afterwards, but I was wondering if anybody else has ever taken this action, and if so, how did it work out?

Don't know about the walls. I have clean cushions with a steam cleaner and it works pretty well. If you can take the covers off, you can wash them in cold water in your washing machine (air dry) and they actually come out a little better.

I was thinking of using a steam cleaner for my O'day 22. I recently bought the boat and found out that there are several leaks on the top deck that are leaving water marks on my carpeted walls inside the cabin. Gotta love it when a scumbag sells you a boat that is riddled with problems that he "forgot" to mention...

What was the process you used? I've used resolve before in the house, and the directions indicate vacuuming it up after allowing it to sit for several minutes. Is this what you did, or did you rinse it off after instead?

We have "been there done that and (not) got the T shirt." When we bought our boat in the early 90's the fabric hull liner had areas with mold and mildew stains. After several tries with a Bissell carpet cleaning machine it was 95% better... but there were some areas that we just could not completely get the odor out of. We finally removed the glued-on fabric from those areas and are in a long term process/project to recover those parts with new hull ceilings.

With 20/20 hindsight perhaps we should have tried a steam cleaner before giving up.
FWIW, that fabric (Herculon, I surmise) was/is really tough and if kept clean is good looking.
In our case the first owner never did any cleaning or interior maint. for years... and if he had done so, we could never have afforded that boat! :)

Good luck on your "carpet cleaning".

L

Thanks for your help

Thanks for your help gang.
I think my situation is much like that of FastOlson. Other than our occaisional vacumming, I don't think these walls and cushions have seen any kind of cleaning in their life. I known there's a bit of mildew here and there, so I anticipate having to go over it a few times. My biggest concern is leaving "wet" carpets and cushions in a boat. Thankfully the long range forecast is for warm and dry for the next week so that'll help.

I would work it in and let it dry then I would vacuum. Then repeated it if needed. I did my headliner and walls too because when I bought it their was mold & meldow all over. It looks great now.
