Staysail Modification

Another modification I have made to my H37C which might interest others is that I have modified the staysail rig so that it can be reefed to storm jib size. I enjoy heavy weather sailing and am therefore a very big fan of cutter rigs and staysails in particular. Very utilitarian rig for heavy weather. The following modification makes it even better and safer than trying to hank on storm sails when its really hairy out. The modification to create a storm jib sized staysail system is realatively easy. 1) Add an appropriately located reef point to the sail (your sail maker should be able to advise you on this -- if not -- find another sailmaker or I can refer you to one) 2) Add a reefing line to the rig. On my boat the aft boom end already contained sheaves that could be used for this purpose, but no other relevant rigging. Therefore I added a reefing hook on the forward end of the boom -- mounted using the existing gooseneck bolt and some shims. I added a small cleat near the forward end of the boom as well as an exit plate for the reefing line just aft of the cleat. I also added a padeye to secure the end of the reefing line. All these components were added on the starboard side of the staysail boom. The system is very easy and quick to use. The only problem I have found is that the jack-lines on the luff of the staysail occassionally catch on the reefing hook. Probably could be remedied with a different design of hook. The system underwent an unplanned field test off the Texas coast last year when we got hit by unexpectedly severe storm conditions (gusts to 65KTS). The storm was very strong and prolonged (about 18 hours). We reefed down to storm jib and ran before the storm on a broad reach. We hit 9.5KTS VMG (surfing down about 14ft seas). The boat was very well balanced and performed beautifully under this sail plan despite the severe conditions. This was all great fun but very tiring so we hove-to for the night until the storm abated. The boat hove-to well under this configuration and conditions and we road out the evening quite comfortably (only 1 or 2 waves broke on deck and not heavily). FYI, Curtis
