I've recently noticed the side stays of my 25, both top and bottom, seem to have too much play. Should the stays be tight when not under stress? The turnbuckles have little room left to take up the slack. Any harm in them being too loose? Thanks for any info.

tight is right

your stays should be tight. there may not be any room on your turnbuckles because the mast is raked to far towards the stern. before you tighten up, make sure everything is in good condition. cheers

Not Too Loose!

After 27 years of trailer sailing, I can say that a little slack in the leeward stays is natural. But not too much. While on the trailer, the mast should be perfectly vertical and the shrouds firm. That's when we check things over and make adjustments. Also, be sure to keep your lifelines TIGHT. They are useless when loose and sagging, and does not look "ship shape". Happy sailing!!
