I am trying to understand which states (East Coast) require special permits if I trailer my boat and the width exceeds 8 feet. Does anyone have a site they can point me to that is an easy reference tool. How difficult is it to get these permits if required? Thanks for your help.

I thought it was 8.5' but....

that might vary also. I don't have any specifics on east coast states, but I towed from MI to CO, the six states (I think it was six, maybe seven) were pretty easy to deal with. I called each on the phone....started with the Highway Dept and within two phone calls always got the right permit people. They were pretty much more interested in my $ than anything else (just my impression) and made it pretty easy. Prices ranged from $10 to $20 per state, each permit lasted 7 to 10 days. They did usually want specifics as to the roads I was taking. Restrictions varied...that is some would't allow night driving, some allowed no driving on wet or snow covered roads, all had some sort of lighting or flag requirements. And, there were some roads (usually those under construction) that I wasn't allowed on....same with time restrictions passing by large cities. I was towing a 9'10" beam boat. Not that bad getting the permits. Brad on the Willy T
