Probably all of us have “seen” something out of the corner of the eye that gets the heart racing – only to reveal itself as a misinterpretation by the brain of something familiar and non-threatening.
At the helm on SF Bay a few days ago, my sunglass protected eyes were generally looking forward while I was multi-tasking lunch, steering, and conversation with my wife. A deep rumble engine noise from somewhere across the bay to my right and slightly astern of beam caused me to turn my head. For a split second, while it was still in my peripheral vision with the sun behind it and with its definition obscured by hazy sunshine conditions, I was genuinely startled by the silhouette of a large strangely structured "vessel" passing by.
The picture attached captures the object/view. I’ve taken the liberty of changing the contrast/brightness to better convey the apparition as I saw it through my dark sunglass lenses. Otherwise, the photo is as the camera took it.
Despite my viewing this SF Bay feature many thousands of times in my life since the age of 8, I was still the nonetheless startled for that brief moment.
Anyone else have a memorable case of eye/brain deception?
