Ok.......
When you service your fuel system and want to help the engine get started again which fluid do you use??

Gary is right on. You need to be sure all the air is out out of the fuel lines. That is all it will take.

When you say “service “ your fuel system what exactly do you mean?

A diesel runs with very high compression, adding starting fluid increases the already high compression and can ruin the engine internals. So NO starting fluid.

If all the air is bled out of the system, it should start right up. Depending on your engine expect to spend some quality time with pump on the filter and the lift pump.

This is NOT RECOMMENDED
BUT
in really desperate situations in Australia some people use Start ya Bastard.
And I see that it is available in the States.
Check out the instructions.
Benefits

  • Starts all engines easily
  • Easy to use
  • Conserves batteries
  • No mechanical knowledge necessary
  • Saves inconvenience
  • Avoids down-time of equipment
  • Makes life easier for frail people who use small engines in their garden etc.

My old backhoe has a built in starter fluid system and was the recommended method back fifty years ago. My newer Perkins marine diesel (40 yo) starts without glow plugs or starting fluid. It’s a fine running machine.

You could try warming the air at the air intake if it is cold outside and need a little help getting the diesel started.

My Yanmar does not have glow plugs, so when it is cold out, I have heated the air at the air intake with a hair dryer before starting her.

Another trick is to leave the throttle in idle, crank the engine for a few seconds before increasing throttle.

Great marketing, it is for frail people with no mechanical knowledge.
If the diesel won't start it needs servicing, not a can of starter fluid.

There's no throttle on a diesel engine, only a speed control, which is connected to the governor speed control, that many people call a throttle.

So, how does what you say do anything?

This made me chuckle. How does a hair dryer have any affect on an engine that's a couple of hundred pounds of cold cast iron?

It doesn't heat the engine block, it heats the air. The warmer air helps the fuel vaporize which makes it easier to start. It is also unlikely that @Tally Ho is trying to start his engine in subzero temps, so a little heat might well make a big difference in starting.

BTW, some Yanmar's are cast aluminum.

I hear you, but I'd be shocked if it really made a difference. Once that thing starts cranking, and breathing gallons and gallons of air, how does the little bit of warm air in the manifold to start make a difference, and how would a hair dryer keep up with warming the air that this engine is breathing? I call B.S. on this.

A glow plug is an entirely different matter.

I would think the difference a hair dryer makes would pale in comparison to the heat of compression. Diesel compression ratios run from like 1:15 to 1:25. This generates a lot more heat, heats much more air than a hair dryer pointed at the intake could ever do.

hair dryer to heat air in intake works very nicely. standard practice of any good mech. a glow plug is used to heat the incoming air. same difference.

i have used starting fluid from time to time on my on my 56 year old perkins 107. no problems so far. i researched it. i found no proof that it will hurt anything. on the giant ship diesels each cylinder has an entire can attached to it for every cold start.

all our boats do have a throttle

Yes.. heard some use wd40 also heard some use disc brake cleaner
DO NOT USE Starter fluids used in gasoline engines could blow your cylinder head right off
So...which one to use if you just want to help it start without doing damage
