Starter selinoid

I had, had a problem with the Ignition on my Vega "Sealegs". The starter would not work. The starter solinoid has a wire that appears to act as a fuse. It is burnt out. This would seem to mean that their is a short in the Starter or maybe the generator. The other possibility is that I have hand cranked up the engine with the ignition turned off? I have thought about soldering a wire across with a fuse in it. I am thinking to start with a 20 amp fuse for a first try. If it blows then I might try 30 amp. I have tested the starter with an ohm meter and there seems to be no short.
I also replaced the bulbs in the saloon with Led bulbs from West Marine $38.00 each. They think something of those. I plan to go on line and look for better deals on bulbs for running lights and other cabin lights. If someone has a a link to a good supplier I would appreciate if you posted it in reply.
In tracing the wiring out I found a lot of wires that had been put in over the years but no longer used. I got rid of those just to simplify things.
I was staying aboard for several days with high humidity and temps in the mid and upper 90's. It was so hot I could hardly work on wiring or anything else. I definitely couldn't think through what I was doing very well in the heat. The first day I was so interested in what I was doing I forgot to drink water and got dehydrated and found myself staggering around like a drunk. After that I drank a gallon a day. So you guys who are in this heat wave be careful.
I have a little 4000 BTU air-conditioner that I will take back to the boat next week and if it is still hot I will set it in the companionway and get the temps down enough to get some work done. It's almost impossible to think or work when sweat is running down in your eyes. :0
There are some starter,Generators for sale on Ebay along with solenoids made for Cub tractors that are said to fit and work. They are Delco-Remy I think. We are planning a trip down the inland waterway sometime in the near future so a spare starter could be a handy thing considering how much we will be running on the engine.
The Volvo starter solenoid also a voltage regulator I am thinking could be replaced with a firewall type solenoid along with a separate voltage regulator of most any make if need be I would thing does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks for any help here. Doug

I have replaced my Volvo penta with a Beta marine 14, so have ALL the engine parts available, generator alternator, starter, prop, shaft, engine controls, the works. Shipping is a bitch but a lot less than a new engine or generator... All systems worked ok when I took them out. Let me know if you want anything.

Thanks Newbold, I was given a cub tractor starter/generator almost new last night. The voltage regulator I have is new so I am now in pretty good shape starter wise.. I am sure somebody here will need the stuff you have. If not and you are on the east coast USA I would conceder buying all of it as spares as I have no intention of getting ride of my Volvo. Please email e'mail me directly. Thanks Doug On Thu, 18 Jul 2013 08:01:13 -0400
